How To | Cutting Sunflowers
One of the questions we are often asked, is “how do I know which sunflowers to cut?”
As you wander our acres of sunflowers, you will notice them in various stages of bloom. And while it may be tempting to cut the biggest, brightest, most fully bloomed flowers (and you should definitely give in to that temptation from time to time), they will likely begin wilting and drooping just a few days after being cut.
So, to achieve the longest vase life possible, here are a few tips on when and how to cut sunflowers.
Choose flowers that are just beginning to open. If it looks like the sunflower you’ve chosen is blowing a kiss with its petals, thats the perfect cutting time!
Cut stems at a 45° angle, to desired length (around 2 feet). Cutting the stems at an angle allows for better water absorption for the life of your cut flowers.
Remove all of the leaves by cutting close to the stem, or stripping them off. Too many leaves on your cut flowers make it more difficult to hydrate the colorful blooms, as the flower attempts to direct water to its leaves.
We encourage you to cut your flowers as the last part of your visit with us, to minimize the amount of time your freshly cut flowers are out of water.
It is our hope that these tips will help you to enjoy our flowers for as long as possible.
