Planning for Spring 2024

A dusting of snow doesn’t turn everyone’s thoughts to spring and visions of beautiful plants. However, at Danndee Flowers we can’t wait to start making plans for our gardens. The lavender plants have been covered with a winter blanket (similar to a heavy dryer sheet) to keep them from drying out with the harsh winds of winter. The dahlia tubers are tucked away in a bed of vermiculite and specialty seed is ordered from our vendors. We select seed that is bred to resist disease and the right height to go in bouquets. Last year we realized we grew a “Barbie Garden” with most of our flowers a bright pink. This is a new year and an opportunity for an array of colors. We need to decide the dates we will be open on the farm and other markets to serve. Plants will be grown to be at their best for each of our customers.

Some of the flowers of 2023:

To get started, (I can’t hold back) I want to work on a service project for the local YMCA. I plan to start a tall red Echinacae called Cheyenne Spirit. Its height is 18-36 inches and will be stunning this summer. It takes about 5 1/2 months for the seed to develop and flower. The perennial Echinacae should welcome pollinators and add color around the YMCA for many years.
